The Little Sioux River bends through the east side of Spencer past Leach Park, where the cottonwoods hold the damp and the grass in the bottom comes in thick. Grant's Lawn Care works the neighborhoods on that side of town on Saturday mornings, when the river air is still cool and the mower leaves a dark wet track behind it. A river-bottom yard grows differently than one up on the flat — heavier, faster, quicker to mat — so it gets cut a little higher and a little more often. Trim around the trees, edge the walk, blow the drive, move on. Nothing complicated about it, just a lawn that looks right when everybody comes out on the porch.
