Every August the Clay County Fairgrounds fill with more people than Spencer sees the rest of the year combined, but by January the same grounds sit empty and white under the shade trees that line its midway the other eleven months. D-Lux Landscape & Tree Service keeps those same trees through the winter and clears the driveways and lots on the streets around the fairgrounds, working ground that spends most of its year as a landscape crew's project and a few summer weeks as the center of the county. A tree that shaded a fairground food stand in August drops the same bare branches over a plowed lot in February, and knowing which of those limbs are carrying too much wet snow is part of clearing the lot safely underneath them. A fairgrounds-area driveway opened clean, with the empty midway visible past a line of dormant trees, is a version of that ground most people never see. Seeing the fairgrounds this still, empty for eleven months of every twelve, says something about a place that's loud for exactly one week a year.
