The old brick quarry at the edge of Rockford holds fossils worked up out of Devonian rock, proof this ground was shaped by water and ice long before anyone plowed a driveway across it. Shell Rock Valley Landscapes starts its winter mornings along the streets nearest the Winnebago River, where cold pools first, clearing driveways before the quarry park's gate opens for the day. From there the crew moves out toward Marble Rock and Nora Springs, farm lanes and county roads laid over the same limestone the fossils came out of. A second pass through town in early afternoon catches anything the wind has drifted shut since morning. Rockford ends most winter days the way it opens them — river-cold, but open, house to house.
