Toward evening the gravel roads east of Red Oak turn soft blue, and fireflies lift out of the ditch grass a few feet at a time. BK Lawns is usually finishing about then — a last pass with the mower, the trimmer worked around a swing set, the driveway edge cut clean. Mowing here runs from the first warm week of April into October, with cleanups on both ends and weeds taken out before they get ideas. Nothing complicated about it; a yard handled on time, every time. The porch light comes on and the place looks put together.
