About Over the Hills Outdoor Services

South of Prairie City the ground opens into the restored tallgrass of the Neal Smith refuge, where wind crosses unbroken and piles snow into drifts that ignore every property line. Over the Hills Outdoor Services starts there at daybreak, clearing the farm lanes that butt up against that open refuge ground before turning back toward town for driveways and the short block of shops downtown. The name suits the country — low rolling hills break up what would otherwise run flat clear to Monroe and Colfax. Rural approaches get cleared first since they drift worst in open wind, in-town streets last since they hold their shape longer. Prairie City's quiet grid ends up clean under a sky that feels bigger than the town underneath it.
