Spring rain in Polk County falls on a great deal of bare ground — fresh grade behind a new house, a yard torn open and waiting, slopes that will wash if nothing takes hold. L&D Hydroseed answers that with a green slurry sprayed on wet, seed and mulch and water laid down in a single pass so the whole surface starts at once. Two weeks later the haze of new grass rises across the dirt like a photograph developing, and by midsummer it is simply a lawn. The routes run through Pleasant Hill and out across the ground toward Altoona and Bondurant, where new streets keep meeting old farm fields. Turning raw dirt into something you can walk barefoot on is a fine use of a spring.
