Perry grew up around the railroad, and the old depot that once loaded livestock and grain now anchors the trailhead for the Raccoon River Valley Trail, cyclists in summer replaced by a different kind of quiet in winter. RT Contracting works the commercial lots and access points around that same stretch of town, clearing the parking areas and walkways that keep the trailhead and the businesses near it reachable even after a heavy snow. The old rail grade the trail follows runs flat and straight out of town, offering little resistance to wind that can drift a lot shut in a single overnight storm. This crew treats those commercial spaces like any working job site, scraped to bare pavement, edges cut clean, salt down before the first customers arrive. By midmorning, the depot's parking lot and the trail's edge both look ready for a use that won't really pick back up until the snow lets go of Perry for the year.
