Perry sits where the corn country loosens into the Raccoon River valley, and the old rail line that once hauled grain out of town now runs north as a trail toward Minburn and Rippey. Summer here arrives in one green rush, and keeping up with it means trimming close to fence posts and edging the walks until the concrete shows a clean gray seam again. There is a particular satisfaction in the last pass of an afternoon, when the clippings are blown off the drive and the whole lot reads as one unbroken sweep of green. Fall brings the leaf work and spring the first cleanup, and in between the grass is simply held to its line.
