Just outside Palo, the marsh along the river draws herons and geese most of the year, and even in the dead of winter it holds a stillness that carries right into town on a snowy evening. JAM Lawn & Landscape works Palo's streets with that same quiet attentiveness, moving driveway to driveway while the marsh grass out past the last row of houses stands frozen and gold against the snow. This is landscape work turned toward winter, reading a yard's slope and drainage in July pays off in January, knowing exactly where meltwater will refreeze into black ice by the next cold snap. The short distance between Palo and its marshland edge means this crew is never far from open, undeveloped ground even while clearing a driveway in the middle of town. When the last truck heads out at dusk, the geese that never fully left for winter are already resettling onto whatever open water the marsh still holds.
