Above the houses of Palo, the land rises into timbered bluffs that catch the first orange light of a winter morning long before it reaches the river below, and Green Earthworks starts its routes right where that high ground meets the low. The name fits work that pays close attention to how land actually lies, which driveways slope toward the river and ice first, which sit high and dry on the bluff and clear easy. Snow moves differently through timber than open field, catching in drifts among the bare branches before sifting down onto driveways below, so this crew reads the tree line as much as the sky. Down along the water, the Cedar moves slow and dark under a skin of ice, indifferent to the work going on just above its banks. By midmorning, driveways from the bluff top down to the river bend are cleared in the same order the light reached them.
