Ottumwa has a long-running affection for its skies — the regional airport just south of downtown has hosted air shows for generations, and on a clear cold night the same stillness that grounds those planes for winter gathers instead over the Des Moines River as it starts to skin over with ice. Messerschmitt Ice Service takes its name seriously, working after dark when temperatures drop hardest and ice on driveways and steps forms fast enough to catch anyone off guard by morning. The river itself never fully freezes here, but the banks and low ground nearby ice thick, and that same cold turns every untreated walkway into a hazard by sunrise. This crew works methodically down one street and up the next, salt trucks trailing behind blades, until every icy patch across town is broken and gritted. By the time the first flight lifts off from the airfield the next morning, the ground below it has already been made safe to stand on.
