Nicks Snow&Mow

About Nicks Snow&Mow

Nichols is a small Muscatine County town on wide, open ground, and in January the wind has nothing to stop it — it lifts yesterday's snow and lays it back down across driveways as if it had just fallen. Nicks Snow&Mow is out in that wind before sunrise, when the sky over the fields is still the color of slate and the porch lights are the only warm thing in sight. The plow cuts a clean lane, the shovel trims the steps, and the cleared drive shows dark and straight against the drifted yards on either side. It is a small, tidy victory over a big prairie winter, and it is there waiting when the garage door goes up. Then the wind picks up again and the work starts over, because out here that is simply how winter goes.
