Newton grew up around the Maytag works, and though the old plant's whistle doesn't mark the hours anymore, the streets built up around it still fill the same grid they always have, running out from the square toward Maytag Park. Austincrete keeps that grid clear all winter, working driveways and sidewalks on the older residential blocks near downtown as carefully as on the newer streets built toward the edge of town. Jasper County's open farmland gives a storm plenty of room to build speed before it reaches Newton, and a fast-moving system can leave more snow on the west side of town than the east by the time it clears. The crew adjusts route to route rather than running the same pass everywhere, taking each driveway to solid pavement so the next freeze doesn't turn a plowed street back to ice. It's methodical work in a town still shaped by the industry that built it, even after the whistle went quiet.
