T's Turf Cuts uses mornings like that to gauge the storm before starting its route, then works driveways and sidewalks outward from the park toward the edges of town. The Maquoketa River valley holds cold air close to the ground, so a Monticello snow can linger heavier and longer than a forecast for the wider region might suggest. The crew brings each property down to pavement rather than a packed layer that would only turn to ice once the temperature swings back up. By the time the park's lawn shows footprints again, most of the town's driveways already do too.
