The Maquoketa River bends right through the middle of Monticello, and on cold mornings it throws up a fog that settles over the closest streets before it burns off. D&D Services LLC often starts there, clearing driveways and sidewalks along the river-side blocks before working out toward the newer streets on higher ground at the edge of town. Eastern Iowa snow tends to come heavier and wetter than the powder further west, which means a fresh fall can be surprisingly hard to move if it sits even an hour past first light. The crew works fast in those early hours, getting ahead of a wet snow before it packs down under its own weight. By midmorning, the fog off the river has usually cleared along with the snow, and Monticello's streets are down to pavement on both sides of the water.
