About West Lawn Cemetery

The week before Memorial Day, when lilacs are just fading and small flags wait in bundles, the grounds of West Lawn Cemetery in Lehigh are mowed for the families who will come. Grass is cut low and even along each aisle of graves, while trimming runs close around every marker so each name stands clear. Not far off, the Des Moines River slides past through its wooded valley, and the morning air carries the sweet smell of fresh clippings. Here, mowing carries a purpose deeper than neatness, a way of keeping faith with the people of Lehigh. When visitors arrive with flowers, the lawn is ready to receive them.
