About Ruhland Nurseries LLC

Every row of trees and shrubs that Ruhland Nurseries LLC spends the growing season tending goes dormant under snow each winter, the same ground that's a nursery in June turning into a quiet, white field by January, and the crew that knows those rows by heart carries that same familiarity over to the driveways and walks they clear in town. There's a particular stillness to a nursery in deep winter — no customers browsing the rows, just snow lying evenly over burlapped root balls — that stands in contrast to the plowed, salted blocks around the town square a few minutes away. Clearing a driveway after a storm is a smaller, faster version of the same patience the nursery work demands: work the edges first and keep the line even all the way across. On the coldest mornings, frost feathers across the greenhouse glass long before the first driveway gets touched, a small sign of just how far the temperature dropped overnight. By midday, with the nursery rows still buried and silent, the town's driveways carry the only fresh lines cut into an otherwise undisturbed snow.
