Le Mars runs partly on the schedule of the ice cream plant that never really stops, trucks rolling in and out at every hour, and Kellen Excavating, LLC keeps the gravel routes and lot approaches on the edge of town open no matter what hour a storm decides to hit. This is heavy-equipment work, the same loaders and skid steers that move dirt on a summer job site repurposed in January to push back drifts too deep or too packed for a plow blade alone. Out past the last streetlight, where the pavement turns to gravel and the fields open up flat in every direction, snow doesn't stay put — it drifts and refills a cleared lane within hours if the wind is working against you. The crew treats every storm like a job with a deadline, because somewhere nearby a truck is waiting to get out onto the highway. By the time the wind finally lays down, the routes back into Le Mars are open again, gravel and blacktop alike cleared back to a surface trucks can rely on.
