It's a system built for a town this size: no single route covers Johnston fast enough alone when a real storm comes through overnight, so the brothers cover it in parallel and meet back in the middle by midmorning. The ground near the old Guard post holds cold longer than the open subdivisions nearby, shaded by mature trees that never got cleared for building, so that route usually goes first while the ice there is still soft enough to break up easily. Whichever side finishes first swings over to help close out the other, the way the work has always split between the two of them. By noon, both halves of town look the same — driveways bare, walks salted, the storm already old news.
