Reed's Hauling runs its trucks after dark, when Jefferson's grain elevator lights are the brightest things on the skyline and the rest of downtown has gone still for the night. A storm that piles snow against loading docks and alley entries downtown doesn't wait for morning, so the crew hauls it out block by block while the town sleeps — off tight lots near the square, away from doorways that need to open at six. Out past the edge of town, where Highway 30 splits toward the rest of Greene County, drifts can bury a farm entrance overnight, and the same trucks make that run before first light. There's a particular kind of headlight-lit work in hauling snow rather than just pushing it aside: somewhere it has to go, and this crew knows every field edge and low ditch around Jefferson wide enough to take a full load.
