A few miles outside Iowa Falls, Pine Lake State Park holds two small lakes formed by dams on the Iowa River, and the road out to it runs past some of the same rural properties that Maines Home & Yard Services clears through the winter before the park's gates close for the season. The Iowa River bends right through the middle of Iowa Falls, and the chill that gathers along its banks keeps the streets nearest the water icy longer than the ones on higher ground a few blocks back.
