About Koality Work
A footbridge crosses the Iowa River just south of downtown, carrying students and staff between the two halves of the university campus, and the walks feeding into it are some of the first surfaces in the neighborhood to ice over, catching wind off the water from both directions at once. Koality Work clears the driveways and walks in the blocks around that crossing, treating the approach to a bridge landing as its own small hazard, different from an ordinary front walk. The river's edge holds cold air longer than the blocks a few streets back, so a route that starts near the water and works outward often finds the driveways drier the farther they get from the bank. Iowa City's older residential streets nearby run at odd angles to the river instead of a strict grid, laid out before anyone was thinking about plow routes, and the crew has learned which of those angled blocks trap snow against a curb longer than the rest. It's a quieter kind of work than the big lots downtown, done mostly a driveway and a short walk at a time.
