Garcia Snow Removal

About Garcia Snow Removal

The Longfellow neighborhood's narrow lots and older homes sit close enough to downtown Iowa City to hear the bells from the Old Capitol on a still evening, and its sidewalks — brick in places, poured decades ago in others — hold snow in uneven patches that don't clear themselves in any predictable order. Garcia Snow Removal works those walks by hand where a blade won't fit, block by block, matching the pace of a neighborhood built before anyone thought about snow removal equipment. Driveways here tend to be short and steep-angled off the street, built for cars decades smaller than what parks in them now, and clearing one well means getting the blade right up to the garage door without leaving a lip at the sidewalk. Evenings after a workday storm are often the busiest stretch, residents coming home to find the plow trucks have pushed a ridge across the end of every drive on the way past. Clearing that ridge is its own small, necessary chore, done in the dark more often than not this time of year.
