Independence grew up on the east bank of the Wapsipinicon, and the old feed mill still stands watch over the dam there the way it has for well over a century, a reminder that this town has always run on the river's rhythm. J's Property Maintenance works the streets on both sides of the Wapsi, from the Victorian blocks near downtown out toward where Rush Park once drew crowds by the thousands to watch trotting horses run the old kite-shaped track. Winter quiets that history down to just the sound of a plow blade and a river running dark and half-iced beneath the bridge, but the streets still need clearing whether anyone's watching or not. Driveways along the river bottom hold damp and ice longer than the blocks up on higher ground, so this crew works those low streets first and the rest of town after.
