Independence grew up around the Wapsipinicon — the river bends through the middle of town past the old stone mill and the dam, and you can hear the water from the streets above it. G & L Lawn Rangers, LLC works those blocks and the ones out past Rush Park, mowing on a weekly turn, trimming and edging, running fertilization and weed control, and clearing yards in spring and again when the leaves come down. Iowa summer does as it pleases here: a July storm rolls up the Wapsi valley in the afternoon, and two days later everything needs cutting at once. The reward is the after — a wide green yard striped end to end, the walk swept, the edge along the drive standing up sharp enough to catch the light. The route carries on out to Jesup, Winthrop, Quasqueton, Rowley and Hazleton, where the same attention shows on every lawn it touches.
