At the edge of Huxley, where the newest streets give out onto open prairie ground running toward Ames, Landscapes by Design spends its winters doing the opposite of its summer work — instead of shaping beds and borders, it's clearing the straight lines of driveways and walks against a landscape gone flat and white in every direction. That edge is where the wind gets its longest run before it hits anything, and drifts pile up fastest on the last few houses before the fields start. Getting those driveways open early matters as much here as it does downtown, maybe more, since it's a longer, colder walk to a stuck car out where the town runs out. Dusk is often the better hour for a second pass, once the day's wind has quit and the drifts have stopped rebuilding themselves. Huxley's prairie edge asks a little more of a winter crew, and this one answers it door by door.
