In April the Floyd River runs high and brown past Hospers, carrying the thaw off the black Sioux County fields and south toward the Missouri. Solsma Excavating and Tiling bears a name rooted in this ground, where drainage tile lies beneath much of the farmland, and around town it takes on lawn care and snow removal alike. Summer means yards cut level and trimmed square to the drive, as orderly as the section-line roads that grid the county. Winter means the opposite chore: drives plowed open and sidewalks scraped after the prairie wind has had its way. Between the two, a home in Hospers keeps the scrubbed, squared-away look this Dutch-settled corner of northwest Iowa takes pride in.
