By the time Hiawatha's stretch of the Cedar Valley Nature Trail sees its first walker of the day, 5 Seasons Services has already run the plow along the trailhead lot and the residential blocks that feed into it. Fifty-two miles of trail start right here, headed out toward Robins and beyond, and in winter that means a steady trickle of runners and dog-walkers who expect the parking area clear before the sun is fully up. The crew treats every season as its own job with its own rules, which in January means reading how the wind off the open fields north of town piles snow differently than it does in the tighter blocks near Cedar Rapids. Clearing a trailhead is a small thing next to clearing a whole subdivision, but it's the first thing people see of Hiawatha on a winter morning. Getting it right, early, sets the tone for the rest of the day's routes.
