Forest City earns its name honestly, with Pilot Knob rising wooded and steep just east of town and Rice Lake's shoreline timber wrapping around the water north of it — more tree cover than most towns this size in north-central Iowa get to keep. Al's Tree Services spends the year working that timber, and winter adds a second job to the same skill: reading which driveways sit under branches heavy enough to matter and clearing them before an ice-laden limb comes down on a parked car. A wooded lot holds snow differently than an open yard, shaded and slow to melt, so a driveway tucked back under oak cover can stay icy long after the open street in front of it has gone bare. Getting that kind of driveway scraped clean and salted at the shaded end takes the same eye for a tree's weight and reach that goes into taking a limb down safely. Winter work like this fits a town that actually has the trees to earn its name.
