Hawkeye Farm Services works the farm ground on the flatter tableland above the valley most of the year, and when winter comes down off those bluffs, the same tractors and loaders go out to push snow off farm lanes and driveways before morning chores start. A valley town like this gets a different kind of drift than open prairie — snow sliding and piling where the grade breaks instead of spreading even across a field — so a lane clear at dusk can be shut by a slide overnight. Getting a farmstead's lane open before the school bus makes the climb up from the valley, or a driveway on one of Fayette's steep in-town streets scraped back to pavement, is the same job either way: a loader blade and a read of the ground learned from farming it.
