Fairfield's square sits at the center of Jefferson County with the courthouse holding down the middle of it, brick storefronts running out in four directions toward streets that have carried the same traffic pattern for a century. Bob Brown Excavating spends most of the year digging foundations and grading lots around that square, and come winter the same equipment turns to clearing the driveways and lots tucked in behind those storefronts and the homes on the streets radiating out from downtown. A crew that reads a lot's drainage for a new build reads a snowfall the same way — where it'll drift against a loading dock, where meltwater off the square's roofs will refreeze by evening. Getting the lots downtown open before the shops unlock their doors keeps the square's rhythm going even in the dead of January. Dirt moves in July, snow moves in January, and the same equipment yard handles both.
