The newer end of Fairfax is all cul-de-sacs and young trees still staked against the wind, streets that didn't exist a decade ago running out toward what used to be cropland along the Cedar River. Simply Green spends the summer keeping those new lawns even, and once the mower decks go up on blocks for the winter, the same trucks come back out with plow blades on the front. A subdivision built on flat, open ground drifts differently than an old-town street — the wind has nothing to break it, so a driveway can fill in twice in one storm — and a crew that already drives these streets every week in summer knows exactly which ones need a second pass. Getting a cul-de-sac's worth of driveways open before the school bus loops through means a dozen households start the day without shoveling first.
