Fairfax has grown up fast along the Cedar River south of Cedar Rapids, new subdivisions pushing out past the old grain elevator and the fields that used to run all the way to the water. Bushman Excavating spends most of the year moving dirt for those new foundations, and in winter the same graders and skid loaders that cut a building pad get fitted with blades and turned loose on driveways and lots. A crew that already knows how a piece of ground drains knows exactly where the snow will drift against a new house's north wall, or pool at the low corner of a cul-de-sac. Clearing a fresh subdivision's streets and driveways takes the same equipment, the same operators, just aimed at snow instead of clay — the blade coming down clean, the pile stacked well clear of the next car pulling in. The town is still filling in its map, and this is the heavy work that keeps pace with it.
