Exira, the oldest town in Audubon County, grew up in the valley of the East Nishnabotna River. On a still June morning, mist lifts off the river bottoms and wanders through town before the sun burns it away. Nelson Mowing is a name that says exactly what the business does, and in Exira that means lawns cut level, trim work tidy along walks and fences, and every pass laid down straight. The rich soil of western Iowa grows grass with real ambition in early summer, and keeping up with it takes a regular hand. Come the Fourth of July, when the town fills for its parade and fireworks, a trim yard joins in the welcome. It is simple work, done with an eye that notices.
