Downtown streets near the bridge tend to hold shade longer than the open blocks farther up the bluff, and ice there can linger on a sidewalk well after the rest of town has dried. The crew works commercial lots and residential driveways on the same passes, moving from the business district out toward the edges of Elkader where the bluffs begin to climb again. By midmorning the bridge and the streets leading to it are usually clear, the river running quiet underneath.
