About JJ Block

Along the flat village blocks north of Old Highway 16 the lots are square, the terraces narrow, and everything shows — a missed strip beside the sidewalk, a corner rounded instead of cut. JJ Block mows those West Salem yards with that in mind, trimming close to fences and foundations and edging the concrete so the line stays honest all summer. In autumn the work turns to raking maples out of the beds; in winter it turns to plowing and shoveling the very walks the mower followed in July. Snow comes to town quietly here, filling the streets between the houses before anyone is awake. By breakfast the drives are open and the sidewalks are down to bare concrete.
