The old brick warehouses of Dubuque's Millwork District hold onto winter a little differently than the rest of downtown, their loading docks and narrow alley entries catching drifts the wider streets never see. JD's Groundskeeping clears those docks and walkways alongside its residential routes, plowing and de-icing the tight spaces where a wide truck blade doesn't fit and the work comes down to a smaller machine and a shovel. Driveways across the rest of the city get the same order — plowed, walked, treated — timed to when a Mississippi River system usually moves through overnight and leaves its business for the morning crews to handle. Ice control gets special attention on the brick sidewalks downtown, since old brick holds a glaze longer than poured concrete does once it freezes. It's detailed, small-scale snow removal built for a district where the buildings are older and the spaces between them are tighter than anywhere else in town.
