About Mitchell Outdoor Services LLC

Decorah sits low in a valley the Upper Iowa River carved through limestone bluffs, and winter here means fog rising off the open, spring-fed stretches of water even on the coldest mornings while the bluff tops stay bright and clear. Mitchell Outdoor Services LLC works the hillside streets that climb out of that valley, where a driveway can run steep enough that ice is a genuinely different problem than snow. The crew works those grades down to clean concrete rather than leaving a packed layer, timed so the climb up toward the college or out toward the bluffs is done before most of Decorah is awake. Dunning's Spring runs and half-freezes into its own strange sculpture most winters, icicles building along the rock face while the water beneath keeps moving, a town that keeps functioning through a hard winter without much fuss about it. It's careful, physical work in a place where the terrain itself is half the challenge.
