Broadway's brick storefronts have kept their late-1800s fronts intact for longer than most of Cherokee's newer streets have existed, narrow sidewalks running close along a row of buildings built before anyone thought a car would need to park in front of them. SCE, LLC clears those downtown walks and the driveways on the residential blocks just up from Broadway, working brick and old concrete that holds its ice in different patches than a wider modern street would. A storefront sidewalk here is only a few feet wide, no room for a machine to maneuver, so most of the downtown work gets done by hand, shovel and ice melt spread carefully along a strip barely wide enough for two people to pass. Out on the residential streets rising away from downtown toward the bluffs, the driveways run wider and the work shifts to a plow blade instead of a shovel, a different rhythm for a different part of town. By the time Cherokee's shops open for the morning, Broadway's narrow walk is bare brick again, cleared before the first customer tries the door.
