A barber's work is all in the edges, and so is this. Lawn Barber takes the first cut of the year the way you take the first haircut after a long winter, carefully and a little at a time, letting the turf come back to itself before asking much of it. Around the Coe College blocks the old shade trees are only just breaking bud in late April and the lawns beneath them come up uneven, which is where trimming and a clean edge do most of the visible work. From there it settles into a steady schedule for the season: mow, trim, edge, sweep up, come back. Tidy is a small word for what that does to a street.
