Benton's has spent plenty of years moving sand and gravel around Cedar Falls, and that same yard supplies the material that keeps the roads near George Wyth and the river passable once the plows have already been through. The crew runs sand and salt trucks along those low, tree-shaded stretches early, before the morning's first runners and dog-walkers reach the trailheads along the Cedar River. Heavier equipment handles the wider commercial lots and access roads, pushing accumulated snow back to the treeline instead of leaving it to narrow the lanes over a longer storm. It's a different scale than a residential shovel crew, full loads, wide passes, roads treated rather than swept, but it's the same river-valley cold it's working against. By full daylight, the roads along the water hold their footing again.
