A drive scraped to bare concrete under a stand of mature spruce, branches still holding their own separate weight of snow overhead, is a specific kind of satisfying. Ankeny's older streets fill with foot traffic once school lets out, so the sidewalks along those blocks get cleared with as much care as the driveways. It's a small, old part of a fast-growing city, and keeping it walkable through a hard winter feels like keeping faith with it.
