Head north out of town on the High Trestle Trail and Ankeny lets go of you inside a mile: subdivision, then windbreak, then section-line country running flat toward Slater. J & J Landscaping works the near end of that gradient, where cul-de-sac lawns meet what was corn ground a few seasons back. Evenings are the best of it — long light across a fresh cut, the smell of it hanging in the cooling air, every border sharp where grass gives way to concrete. Spring brings the raking and the first hard mow; autumn brings the maples down in a single week if the wind wants it that way. Ankeny, Polk City, Sheldahl and Alleman all sit inside the route.
