Before Grand Avenue sees its first commuter, SSR's trucks have already made a pass, headlights cutting a short cone through whatever's still coming down. Ames at four in the morning in January is mostly streetlights and the sound of a plow blade finding the curb, and that's when the real work gets done — before anyone's watching, before the lot needs to be clear. A clean scrape down to blacktop, salt spread even at the edges, is the whole job done right, no drama to it. Story County can swing from a dusting to a foot inside a single system, so the crew resets for whatever the radar says is coming next. By the time the sun's actually up over the grain elevators east of town, the lots are done and the trucks are already somewhere else.
