The grain elevators on the edge of Ames catch the first light long before it reaches downtown, and the county roads running past them are where SEI Leasing's trucks start their morning. Snow drifts different out where the fields open up — long and low across a gravel road, deep against a fence line — and clearing those lots and long farm driveways takes a different rhythm than a city block. The route runs from the rural edges in toward the lots and driveways closer to campus, so nobody waiting on a clear path is waiting all morning. There's satisfaction in seeing a long driveway cut clean all the way back to a machine shed, no drift left to build back up by noon. Ames in a hard winter is really two towns — the campus grid and the open county around it — and this crew works both.
