Ice skins over the shallows at Ada Hayden Heritage Park long before the rest of Ames commits to winter, and the trail loop around it tells MJ Services what the rest of town is about to get. Lots and driveways near the lake get plowed with that same early read — first pass at first light, second pass if the squall keeps coming off the northwest. There's real pride in leaving a parking lot with corners as sharp as a chalk line, no windrows left to melt into ice by afternoon. Ames winters can turn a wet inch into a skating rink overnight, so the salt goes down before it has the chance. By the time the trail walkers are back out circling the lake, the lots nearby are already clear underfoot.
