Kingdom Keepers

About Kingdom Keepers

On the east side of Ames the evening comes on slowly in summer, light going flat and long down Sixth Street while the mowers are still running. Kingdom Keepers works on a schedule of small faithful acts — mow, trim, edge, sweep the walk, return next week and do it again. The emphasis is care rather than spectacle: turf held at a height that survives August heat, corners actually reached, lines kept true where grass meets concrete. Cleanups take away what each turn of the year drops, so nothing sits on a lawn long enough to do damage. Keeping is the right word for it — a yard handed back a little better than it was found, every visit.
