About Slate Outdoors

Storms here announce themselves an hour ahead — a wall of slate-colored cloud stacking up over the fields west of Altoona, then wind, then everything at once. Slate Outdoors works the good hours in between: mowing, trimming, edging, and clearing the limbs and leaf litter after the weather has taken its turn. An Iowa summer week can leave a narrow window, and there is a craft in reading the sky well enough to finish a route ahead of it. The reward is the calm afterward — grass cut even, the walk swept, the storm's leftovers hauled off before dark. From green-up to the final cleanup of fall, that is how the season goes.
