Alburnett is a scatter of homes north of Cedar Rapids, barely more than a wide spot along the Linn County section roads, held together by a school and a run of windbreak trees against the open farm ground. Dan Sherman Enterprises works those short country blocks, out past the school and along the roads where the same drifts build against the same fence lines nearly every winter. There's a familiarity that comes after enough winters of it — knowing which driveway catches the worst of it, which one tends to stay clear on its own. Getting every one of them open before the first commuter pulls out toward the highway is the whole job, done quietly, one gravel apron at a time.
