Scallon's Lawn Care

About Scallon's Lawn Care

Ackley grew up where two rail lines used to cross — the Hub City, old-timers still call it — and Main Street still holds the shape of that old junction even though the freight schedules have thinned out over the years. When a January storm comes down out of the northwest, Scallon's Lawn Care is out ahead of the school bus, blade down on driveways still holding yesterday's tread marks, out toward the edge of town where corn stubble catches drift like a low fence. There's a particular satisfaction in a straight black line of pavement cut clean through six inches of white, salt laid before the buses turn onto the section road. By the time Ackley's kitchens start smelling like coffee, the walks are bare to the concrete and the steps are dry underfoot. It's steady, unglamorous work for a town that counts on it every winter.
